Colors, Designs, Glitters, and Everything Pretty!

Updated: Jul 15, 2022

Do you want all your favorite colors and designs in ONE dress? Buy yourself a Sudanese "Toub"!

Let's chat about cultural fashion in our first clothing blog! The Sudanese Toub is the traditional garment of Sudanese women. It is typically worn by older women or married women who wear it to represent their marriage but any woman is allowed to wear it if they wish to.

What colors should you wear?

The best part about the Sudanese Toub is that it does not adhere to any certain color codes for different occasions. Wearing a Sudanese Toub gives us the freedom to wear whatever crazy colors we like. My mom has this neon-colored Toub that she likes and wore to her brother's wedding, did anyone find it weird? of course not, because the Toub comes in all different colors and no one can tell you what colors to wear. You don't have to stick to a certain color palette when wearing the Toub.

Although to be entirely honest, some school and college teachers in Sudan still cling to the tradition of wearing a white Toub as their uniform, but then again, there are some who wear it with some colorful touches, which counts for something. Additionally, we have a custom of wearing a dark-colored Toub at funerals, but this is not required and is only a matter of human decency.

Comfort Comes First

My mother always says wearing a Toub is when she is most comfortable, and even though I always questioned her statement I also remembered how I'm most comfortable when I'm wearing my wide-legged pants. We should always wear what makes us feel the most relaxed, and if you enjoy wearing the Toub, it should not be uncomfortable. That is why, when choosing a Toub, a woman must carefully select the perfect material for her. The Sudanese Toub is popular for its diverse material alternatives, which include cotton, chiffon, silk, and many more. Except for the fact that some materials look unattractive as a Toub, there are no restrictions on wearing your favorite material as a Toub.
